Double Glazing in Ferndown: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing provides double glazing in Ferndown with aluminium windows and doors built in our own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, as well as UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We are not a Dorset firm and have no local showroom. Ferndown is roughly 85 miles from Fifield by road, usually around an hour and three-quarters via the M3, M27 and A31, so every survey and installation is planned in advance around the trip.

A young town among the heaths

Ferndown is unusual for a town of its size because so little of it is old. In the 1950s it was still described as a village with a gravel road and a scattering of shops; the Stewart family’s nursery, founded in 1864, opened one of the first garden centres in Britain there in 1955. Most of the present town was built in the decades that followed, with heavy housing growth through the 1970s and 1980s. The former East Dorset Local Plan described Ferndown and West Parley as relatively new settlements with no conservation areas, though some neighbourhoods, such as those around Woodland Walk and Golf Links Road, were singled out for their trees and low-density character.

What surrounds the town is just as important. Woodland and heathland, including Holt Heath and Slop Bog, close in around the town, and the local heaths are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest and Special Protection Areas, and the surrounding countryside is part of the South East Dorset Green Belt. Bournemouth Airport at Hurn is about four miles away, and the A31 runs along the northern edge of town, while the A348 from Poole crosses Longham Bridge and follows Ringwood Road with a large share of goods traffic. Even the parish church is a 20th-century building: St Mary’s was begun in 1933 and not completed until 1972.

Glazing for Ferndown’s newer homes

Because so much of Ferndown is late-20th-century, window replacement here is often about swapping first-generation UPVC or aluminium for something warmer, quieter and easier to use.

If aircraft or traffic on the A31 or Ringwood Road bothers you, tell us at survey and we will talk through glass options that help with noise.

Planning with Dorset Council

Ferndown is in the Dorset Council area, and Ferndown Town Council is the local parish-level council. Replacing windows on a house is often permitted development, but listed buildings and flats are exceptions. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so window changes in a block can need consent from the council and the freeholder. Check with Dorset Council if you are unsure, and see our guide to planning permission for replacement windows.

Survey, make, fit

We start with a free survey in your home, measuring every opening and showing colours and glass. You receive a written quote; aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide explains the rest. Aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days, and our own team drives down on the agreed day to remove the old frames, fit and seal the new ones and clear up. Every installation has a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for new windows in Ferndown?

For most houses, replacing windows is permitted development, and Ferndown has no conservation areas according to the former East Dorset Local Plan. Listed buildings and flats are the main exceptions, as flats have no householder permitted development rights. If in doubt, check with Dorset Council before ordering.

Can double glazing help with aircraft and road noise?

Well-fitted modern double glazing is far better at keeping out noise than old, failing units, and the glass specification makes a difference. Tell us at survey if Bournemouth Airport or traffic on the A31 or Ringwood Road is a problem, and we will explain the glass options and what improvement you can realistically expect.

How far do you travel to Ferndown?

Ferndown is roughly 85 miles from our workshop in Fifield, near Windsor, which is usually around an hour and three-quarters by road. We have no Dorset office, so our own surveyor and fitters travel to you on dates we plan in advance, and we bring samples to the survey so you can choose at home.

What doors work best on a single-storey extension?

For a single-storey rear wall, Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors give big panes with slim frames, while Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds open nearly the full width. We check the opening, the lintel and the floor level at survey, then recommend the option that suits how you use the garden.

How much do aluminium windows cost?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The final price depends on size, opening style, glass, colour and the number of windows, and we confirm everything in a written quote after the free survey. Our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors so you know what to expect.
