Brick, colour-wash and the Minster

Wimborne is a market town built where the River Allen meets the River Stour, around its Saxon minster church with Norman and Gothic work and a famous chained library. It holds one of the foremost collections of 15th, 16th and 17th-century buildings in Dorset, and many shops and pubs have 16th to 18th-century frontages.

The Wimborne Minster Conservation Area was designated in 1970 and extended in 1981 and 1992. It covers the whole of the central area and runs north along West Borough as far as Walford Bridge, taking in the grounds of Deans Court and the watermeadows between Canford Bridge and Julians Bridge. The council’s appraisal describes a town of well-kept brick and colour-washed buildings under mostly slate roofs, with Georgian houses in West Borough featuring classical doorcases and Georgian-proportioned windows, and Victorian and Edwardian terraces that often keep their original sliding sashes. The parish has also grown quickly, rising from 6,790 people in 2011 to 9,059 in 2021.

Local planning has long restricted new building in places such as the Cornmarket and the High Street, which is a big reason so many original buildings survive, among them the Town Hall and the building that houses the Museum of East Dorset.

Rivers and flooding

Living at the confluence of two rivers brings flood risk. Environment Agency records show recorded flood extents around the town centre stretching back to 1703, with several from winter 2013–14 and the most recent in October 2021. If your home is in a lower-lying street, mention it at survey: we will think about sill heights and how a new door threshold sits against the outside ground level.

Planning: Dorset Council

Dorset Council, the unitary authority, handles planning for Wimborne. Its conservation area appraisal is a material consideration in planning decisions, so if you live in the centre or along West Borough, check with Dorset Council before you order new windows or doors. Listed buildings need consent, and flats have no householder permitted development rights, so they usually need planning permission and the freeholder’s approval. Our planning permission guide explains the basics.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wimborne town centre a conservation area?

Yes. The Wimborne Minster Conservation Area was designated in 1970 and extended in 1981 and 1992. It covers the whole central area and runs north along West Borough to Walford Bridge. If your home is inside it, or is listed, check with Dorset Council before changing windows or doors.

Can you make sash windows for a Georgian house on West Borough?

We do not make timber windows, including timber sliding sashes. If the council wants sashes kept or replaced like for like, we will tell you honestly at survey. Secondary glazing fitted inside the existing sashes is something we can offer, and it improves warmth and cuts noise without altering the frontage.

My house is near the river. Does that affect new doors?

It can. Wimborne has recorded flood extents going back centuries, most recently in October 2021. At survey we look at the outside ground level, the threshold height and drainage around the opening before recommending a door, and we will explain any trade-offs between a low threshold and keeping water out.

How far away are you from Wimborne?

Our workshop is in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 90 miles from Wimborne by road, usually around an hour and three-quarters to two hours. We have no office in Dorset, so surveys and installations are planned in advance, and our own team, not subcontractors, does the measuring and fitting.

What does an aluminium window cost?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 per window. The price for your home depends on window sizes, opening styles, glass, colour and how many openings you are replacing. We confirm everything in a written quote after the free survey, and our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors beforehand.
