Double Glazing in Grays: Windows, Doors and Conservatories

Inspired Glazing installs double glazing in Grays and the surrounding Thurrock area, with aluminium windows and doors made in our own Fifield workshop near Windsor and fitted by our own team. We also supply UPVC windows and doors, composite doors and conservatories. Grays is one of the furthest towns we cover, roughly 62 miles by road and typically an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half via the M25 and the Dartford Crossing, so every survey and installation is planned in advance around the journey.

About homes in Grays

Grays sits on the north bank of the Thames, and the railway reached it in 1854, which set off its growth as a town. Its housing reflects that long run of expansion: older streets near the station and the riverside, wards such as Little Thurrock, Stifford Clays and Chadwell St Mary that grew through the 20th century, and much newer homes at Chafford Hundred. Parts of Grays and Chafford Hundred are built in former Victorian chalk pits, including Lion Gorge and Warren Gorge, which gives some streets a distinctive sunken setting.

There is also a good number of flats in and around the town centre. If you own a flat, remember that flats do not have householder permitted development rights; you will usually need the freeholder’s consent, and should check whether planning permission is required too.

The town has an unusual footnote in building history: the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace had The Dell built here in the 1870s, one of the earliest concrete houses in Britain. Today the Lakeside Shopping Centre at West Thurrock and the Port of London industries along the river are major local employers, and many Grays streets are within easy reach of both. Whether you need a single window, a whole house or new garden doors, the survey process is the same.

Thurrock Council and planning

Thurrock Council is the planning authority. Its designated conservation areas are in the surrounding villages rather than in Grays town itself: Horndon on the Hill, Corringham, Orsett, Fobbing, Purfleet, West Tilbury and East Tilbury. If your home is in one of these, or is a listed building, check with Thurrock Council before ordering. For most Grays houses outside those areas, a like-for-like window swap is a routine job, but our planning permission guide explains when that changes. We do not make timber windows.

Choosing products for Grays properties

Terraced and semi-detached houses

For many Grays homes, UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are the practical choice: well priced, low maintenance and available in white, colours and woodgrain.

Newer homes in Chafford Hundred

Owners replacing first-fit windows on 1990s and 2000s houses often move to aluminium windows for slimmer frames. We fabricate Reynaers SlimLine 68, an outward-opening casement, plus Cortizo and Alunet systems.

Opening up the garden

Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors suit wide openings, and Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors fold right back. A conservatory or orangery adds a room.

Doors and finishing touches

Composite doors, porches, garage doors, and fascias, soffits and guttering.

Riverside and roads

Grays is close to the A13 and about two miles from the M25, and the riverside mixes homes with port and distribution sites. Homes on busy routes or near the waterfront benefit from well-sealed frames that keep out draughts and some of the noise. Our surveyor can talk through glass choices for exposed or noisy elevations.

Where we cover in Thurrock

Grays town, Little Thurrock, Stifford Clays, North and South Stifford, Chadwell St Mary, Chafford Hundred and West Thurrock. Other nearby pages include Basildon, Havering and, across the river, Dartford.

Costs and guarantee

Aluminium windows start from £400. Lead times start from 10 days because we make everything in-house, and we group Grays installations to suit the trip. Each installation carries a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and Constructionline Silver. Our double glazing cost guide explains how prices are built up.

How we work from Fifield

We do not have an office or showroom in Essex. Instead, our surveyor travels from Fifield for a free home survey, measuring every opening and discussing options with you. You receive a written quote; once you accept, we fabricate the frames in our Fifield workshop and our own fitters come over on an agreed date to install them, remove the old units and leave the house tidy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for new windows in Grays?

For most houses in Grays, a like-for-like replacement falls under permitted development, but there are exceptions. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, listed buildings need consent, and Thurrock has conservation areas in nearby villages such as Orsett and Purfleet. If in doubt, check with Thurrock Council before ordering.

Is Grays too far for Inspired Glazing to cover?

No, though it is one of our longer trips. Grays is roughly 62 miles from our Fifield workshop by road, usually an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half via the M25 and the Dartford Crossing. We plan surveys and installations in advance, and our own team makes every visit.

What windows suit a Chafford Hundred house?

Many Chafford Hundred homes were built from the 1990s onwards and still have their original windows. Replacing them with UPVC on the Selecta Advance 70 system is cost-effective, while aluminium such as Reynaers SlimLine 68 gives a slimmer, more modern look. We survey first and recommend options for your elevations.

Can you fit composite doors and porches in Grays?

Yes. We supply and fit composite front and back doors in a range of colours, and we build porches as well. They are often combined with replacement windows so the whole front of the house matches. As with all our work, the survey is free and installation comes with a 10-year guarantee.

How much does double glazing cost in Grays?

Aluminium windows start from £400 each, and UPVC is generally the more economical option. Final prices depend on window size, style, colour and glass. After a free survey we send a written quote. Our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors that affect the price for a typical home.
