Hertford’s homes, old and new

Hertford is the county town, and its centre still follows a medieval street plan. Many buildings on St Andrew Street and Fore Street hide timber frames behind later Georgian or Victorian fronts. North of the river, Bengeo sits on a ridge above the Lea and Beane valley and has a mix of Victorian villas, terraces and twentieth-century semis. To the south and west, estates such as Pinehurst, built in the 1970s, and Sele Farm give the town a large stock of post-war family homes, while Hertingfordbury and Hertford Heath add older village houses.

The rivers Lea, Beane, Rib and Mimram all meet here, with Hartham Common running between them. Homes on the lower ground near the rivers are worth checking against the Environment Agency flood map if you are planning a new conservatory or rear extension.

Our products and where they fit

A quick guide to what we usually recommend in Hertford:

Planning in Hertford: East Herts Council

East Hertfordshire District Council handles planning for Hertford and has 42 conservation areas across the district. The Hertford conservation area covers much of the historic centre, and Hertingfordbury and Brickendon are separate conservation areas nearby. If your home is inside one of them, or is listed, check with East Herts Council before changing window styles or materials. A lot of central Hertford is either listed or in the conservation area, so we always ask about this at survey.

Outside those areas, a like-for-like replacement on a house is usually permitted development. Flats are different: they have no householder permitted development rights, so new windows may need permission, and your lease will usually require freeholder consent. Our replacement windows planning guide covers the basics.

Terraced streets close to the centre often have no rear access and limited parking, so our surveyor will also look at how frames can be carried through the house and where the van can stop. Sorting that out at survey stage saves time on the day and avoids surprises for you and your neighbours.

Villages and suburbs we cover

From Hertford we regularly cover Bengeo, Hertingfordbury, Hertford Heath, Brickendon and Watton-at-Stone. Nearby, see our pages for Ware, Hatfield and Hoddesdon.

Travelling from Fifield

We are a Berkshire-based fabricator and installer, and our only premises are at Coningsby Farm, Fifield. Hertford is roughly 50 miles away by road, usually around an hour and ten minutes via the M25 and A414. We are upfront about that: we book surveys for set days and plan installations in advance so the team arrives with everything it needs.

At the survey we measure each opening, discuss frame colours and glass, and note anything that affects the job, such as narrow access on a terraced street or a listed building nearby. You then get a written quote. Aluminium windows start from £400, and our guide to double glazing costs explains the rest. Aluminium frames are made to measure in our Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days, and every installation comes with a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission for new windows in Hertford town centre?

Possibly. Much of the centre is in the Hertford conservation area and many buildings are listed. Listed buildings need listed building consent for window changes, and conservation areas can affect what is acceptable. Check with East Hertfordshire District Council before ordering, and let our surveyor know so we can plan the job around their advice.

Can you make UPVC windows look traditional for a Bengeo terrace?

Woodgrain-finish UPVC windows can give a warmer, more traditional appearance than plain white frames, and they need little upkeep. We do not make timber windows, so if your home is listed or the council requires timber, another supplier will be needed. Our surveyor will be honest about what is likely to be accepted.

How long do aluminium windows take for a Hertford home?

We make aluminium windows in our own Fifield workshop, with lead times from 10 days after the survey and your order are confirmed. Fitting a typical house usually takes one to a few days. Because we travel from Berkshire, we agree installation dates in advance and keep the days together.

Is it worth replacing the patio door on a Pinehurst estate house?

Often, yes. Many 1970s houses still have old sliding patio doors that are draughty and hard to open. A modern Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door or a bifold can improve comfort, security and how the room works. Our surveyor will measure the opening and explain the realistic options and costs.

Do you cover Hertford Heath and Hertingfordbury?

Yes, we work across Hertford and nearby villages including Hertford Heath, Hertingfordbury, Brickendon and Watton-at-Stone. Hertingfordbury and Brickendon are conservation areas in their own right, so we would recommend checking with East Herts Council before changing windows there.
