What Hoddesdon’s housing looks like
Hoddesdon is an old market town on the River Lea, with the New River and the Lee Navigation running close by. Its history shows in buildings such as Rawdon House of 1622, the 1835 clock tower and the coaching inns along the High Street. After the Second World War the town became a commuter base for London, and estates spread outwards, while the 1960s and 1970s brought redevelopment of much of the centre for the Tower Centre and Fawkon Walk shopping precincts.
As a result, most enquiries we expect here are for post-war family homes: 1950s and 1960s semis and terraces, 1970s and 1980s estate houses, and a growing number of modern flats. Broxbourne, to the south across the Spital Brook, has more varied, often larger houses near the station and the river, along with the old village around St Augustine’s Church.
Conservation areas in the Borough of Broxbourne
Broxbourne Borough Council is the planning authority. It lists six conservation areas, and three are especially relevant to Hoddesdon homeowners: Hoddesdon town centre, Broxbourne and Wormley. The New River conservation area also runs through the borough. If you live inside one of these, or in a listed building, check with Broxbourne Borough Council before you change the style or material of your windows and doors.
For most houses outside these areas, like-for-like replacement windows are permitted development. If you live in a flat, there are no householder permitted development rights, so planning permission may be needed, and your lease will normally require freeholder approval. Our guide to planning and replacement windows explains more. Homes close to the Lea are also worth checking against the Environment Agency flood map before planning an extension.
Which products for which homes
Post-war semis and terraces
Many still have UPVC fitted in the 1980s or 1990s. Our UPVC windows and doors, using the Selecta Advance 70 system, are a practical replacement. A composite door is a robust choice for the front.
Larger houses in Broxbourne and Wormley
Detached homes with big gardens suit Reynaers SlimLine 68 aluminium windows, an outward-opening casement, together with Cortizo or Alunet ranges. For the back of the house, a Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door or a Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold works well; compare them on our patio doors page.
Adding a room
Our conservatories and orangeries suit the garden sizes typical of Hoddesdon’s semis and detached houses, and a roof lantern can brighten a flat-roofed extension. If an older conservatory has become too hot in summer and cold in winter, we can also talk through replacing it rather than simply patching the roof, and porches are a popular smaller project on post-war semis with exposed front doors.
We do not make timber windows. If you prefer a timber look, woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium, or a composite door, gives a similar appearance.
Where we cover nearby
Around Hoddesdon we cover Broxbourne, Wormley, Rye Park, Rye House, Great Amwell and Stanstead Abbotts. See also our pages for Cheshunt, Ware and Hertford.
From survey to installation
Our only base is at Coningsby Farm in Fifield. Hoddesdon is roughly 48 miles away by road, usually around an hour each way via the M25 and A10, so we plan surveys and fitting dates ahead rather than offering same-day visits.
A surveyor comes to your home, measures each opening, shows samples and talks through options. You then receive a written quote; aluminium windows start from £400, and our double glazing cost guide covers what affects the price. Aluminium frames are made in our workshop with lead times from 10 days, and our own fitters install them, make good and tidy up. Every installation has a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Is Hoddesdon town centre a conservation area?
Yes. Broxbourne Borough Council lists Hoddesdon town centre as one of its six conservation areas, along with Broxbourne, Wormley, New River, Wentworth Cottages and Churchgate. If your property is in one of these areas or is listed, check with the council before changing windows or doors, particularly if you want a different style or material.
Do you have an office in Hoddesdon or Broxbourne?
No. Our only premises are at Coningsby Farm, Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 48 miles from Hoddesdon by road. Our surveyor visits your home with samples instead, and our own team travels from Fifield to install. We plan visits ahead so the work runs smoothly despite the distance.
What is the cheapest way to replace windows on a Hoddesdon semi?
For most post-war semis, UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system are the most budget-friendly option we offer, with aluminium windows starting from £400 for those wanting slimmer frames. The total depends on the number, size and style of windows. Our surveyor will give you a written quote after measuring.
Can you replace windows in a Hoddesdon flat?
Yes, with the right approvals. Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so new windows may need planning permission from Broxbourne Borough Council, and most leases need the freeholder's consent. Check both before booking. We can supply product details and drawings to help with any application.
Do you fit bifold doors in Wormley and Broxbourne?
Yes. We install Smart Visofold and Cortizo aluminium bifold doors, and Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, across Wormley, Broxbourne and the rest of the area. Bifolds suit gardens you want to open fully in summer, while sliders give larger glass panes. Our surveyor will help you choose.
