Two towns either side of the Ouzel

Leighton Buzzard and Linslade face each other across the River Ouzel and the Grand Union Canal. On the Leighton side, the High Street alone has more than 70 listed buildings, and the Old Town Hall and the Bank Building stand on the Market Square. Linslade grew up after the London and Birmingham Railway opened in 1838: its centre is a grid of Victorian terraced and semi-detached streets in red brick with slate roofs, plus villas, inns and hotels built for visitors arriving by train.

Away from the centres, the town has grown steadily. The population rose from around 32,000 in 2001 to more than 43,000 by 2020, and major development has spread to the south and east, including the Eastern Leighton Linslade urban extension. So alongside Victorian terraces we see a lot of newer homes, some only a few years old, whose owners want to add sliding doors, upgrade entrances or replace builder-grade windows.

Conservation areas and who to ask

The town has two conservation areas: the Leighton Conservation Area around the historic centre, and the Linslade Conservation Area between the canal and the railway, centred on St Barnabas. The Linslade appraisal notes a good survival of timber sliding sash windows and encourages reinstating traditional windows and doors where they have been lost, particularly on Wing Road and Waterloo Road. Planning is handled by Central Bedfordshire Council, so check with them before ordering for any property in either area or any listed building. Our planning permission guide gives a general overview.

Sand, canal and the Greensand country

Leighton Buzzard is known for its sand quarrying, once good enough to be exported as far as Egypt, and the countryside to the north around Heath and Reach includes Rushmere and Stockgrove country parks. Closer to town, homes near the Grand Union Canal and the River Ouzel are some of the most attractive in the area, and their owners often want large glazed doors that make the most of the view. Before we specify a big sliding or bifold opening near the water, we look at the threshold, drainage and exposure so the door performs as well as it looks.

Choosing products for Leighton Buzzard homes

  1. Linslade Victorian terraces outside the conservation area: slim aluminium windows, including the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement and our Cortizo and Alunet ranges, from £400 per window. We do not make timber windows, so inside the conservation area we will discuss options openly with you.
  2. Interwar and post-war houses: UPVC windows on the Selecta Advance 70 system, with woodgrain or coloured finishes if you want them.
  3. New-build estates: owners often upgrade the garden doors first, to Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds.
  4. Front doors: composite doors in a range of colours and styles.
  5. Extensions and add-ons: conservatories and orangeries, porches, roof lanterns, garage doors, blinds and shutters.

Survey and installation, planned from Fifield

We arrange a convenient survey date, measure every opening and go through styles, colours, hardware and any planning points. Your written quote follows, and our double glazing cost guide explains the main factors that affect price. Aluminium frames are fabricated at Fifield with lead times from 10 days, then our own fitters travel up to install them. We keep the house protected, remove old frames and leave the work tidy. If you are on one of the newer estates and only want the garden doors changed, that is usually a single day on site. Every installation includes our 10-year guarantee.

Villages we cover around Leighton Buzzard

As well as both towns, we work in Heath and Reach, Stanbridge, Eggington, Billington and Wing. Neighbouring areas are covered on our Dunstable, Milton Keynes and Aylesbury pages.

Frequently asked questions

Are you a local Leighton Buzzard company?

No, and we are upfront about it. Our only premises are our workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 42 miles away by road and a little over an hour's drive. Our own surveyors and installers travel up for each job, and we plan visits in advance so the distance does not affect your dates or service.

Can I replace sash windows in the Linslade Conservation Area?

The Linslade appraisal values the surviving timber sash windows and encourages traditional replacements. We do not make timber windows, so whether an aluminium or UPVC alternative is acceptable is a question for Central Bedfordshire Council. Check with them before ordering. Outside the conservation area, slim aluminium casements are a popular choice for Victorian terraces.

What can I upgrade on a new-build home in Leighton Buzzard?

Many owners of newer homes start with the garden doors, swapping a standard set for Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors or a Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifold. A composite front door and replacement windows are other common upgrades. If your home is still under a builder's warranty, check its terms before making changes.

How much do aluminium windows cost in Leighton Buzzard?

Our aluminium windows start from £400 each. The final cost depends on window sizes, opening styles, glass specification, colour and the number of windows. We quote in writing after a free survey, and the price includes our own team travelling from Fifield to fit them. Our cost guide explains the main factors.

What guarantee do I get?

Our installations come with a 10-year guarantee. Because we fabricate aluminium frames in our own Fifield workshop and fit with our own team rather than subcontractors, one company is responsible for the product and the installation. If anything needs attention later, you call the same people who made and fitted your windows.
