Looking at double glazing in Northampton? Inspired Glazing makes aluminium windows and doors in its own workshop at Fifield, near Windsor, and fits them with its own installers, and we also supply UPVC windows, composite doors and conservatories. We should be clear about geography: Northampton is roughly 70 miles from Fifield by road, about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half via the M25 and M1. We do not have a Northamptonshire office, so surveys and installations are planned in advance around the journey.

Shoe factories, a great fire and a New Town
Northampton’s buildings tell three stories. The Great Fire of 1675 swept through three-quarters of the town centre in 24 hours, destroying around 600 buildings; the rebuilding used brick, stone and tile, and a few stone survivors such as the Welsh House of 1595 still stand. Then came shoes. Early in the 19th century about a third of adult men were shoemakers, factories spread beyond the old walls, and terraced streets went up for factory workers. Many former shoe factories now stand converted to housing among those terraces.
The third story began in 1968, when Northampton was designated a New Town. The Development Corporation built estates first to the east, at Lumbertubs, Moulton Park and Round Spinney, then to the south at Briar Hill, Camp Hill and East and West Hunsbury, adding about 15,655 homes between 1970 and 1985. Earlier council estates were built largely east, north and south of the centre, in areas including Abington, Far Cotton, Kingsthorpe and Dallington.
Our recommendations for local property types
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
The Reynaers SlimLine 68 is an outward-opening aluminium casement with slim sightlines, useful in the tall, narrow openings of a terrace. Cortizo and Alunet aluminium windows extend the range; see our aluminium windows and doors. If you want a painted-timber look, consider woodgrain-finish UPVC or aluminium. We do not make timber windows or doors.
New Town estates and suburban semis
UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system give a cost-effective upgrade, and a composite front door combines security with low maintenance.
Extensions and garden rooms
Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors, Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors, conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns. We also fit porches, secondary glazing, garage doors, fascias, soffits, guttering, blinds and shutters.
West Northamptonshire Council and conservation areas
Since 1 April 2021 planning in Northampton has been handled by West Northamptonshire Council, the unitary authority that replaced Northampton Borough Council along with Daventry and South Northamptonshire. Its conservation areas in the town include the Boot and Shoe Quarter, All Saints, Derngate, St Giles, Holy Sepulchre, Billing Road, Barrack Road, Abington Park, Kingsthorpe, Weston Favell, Great Billing, Hardingstone and Delapre Park. The council says a number of its conservation areas also have Article 4 directions.
If your home is in or near one of these areas, check with West Northamptonshire Council before changing windows or doors. Flats, including the many converted factory buildings, have no householder permitted development rights, so you may need planning consent and freeholder approval. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows lists the questions to ask.
The River Nene
Northampton sits on the River Nene, and the Easter flood of 1998 hit Far Cotton and St James hard, killing two people and affecting thousands of homes. For ground-floor doors in low-lying streets we pay attention to thresholds and drainage at survey; for flood-risk advice itself, speak to the Environment Agency or your insurer.
Neighbourhoods and villages covered
We travel to the whole town, including Duston, Kingsthorpe, Abington, Weston Favell, Hardingstone, Wootton, East and West Hunsbury and Moulton. Related pages: double glazing in Wellingborough, Daventry and Milton Keynes.
How we handle a job this far from Fifield
Because of the distance, we schedule Northampton surveys alongside other local appointments and agree your fitting date at the point of order. Our surveyor measures each opening, checks brickwork and reveals and brings samples. The written quote follows, with aluminium windows from Β£400 each; the double glazing cost guide explains how sizes, glass and finishes affect the total. Aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days, and our own fitters travel up to remove the old frames, install, seal and clear away.
All installations come with a 10-year guarantee. We are a listed Reynaers at Home installer partner and hold Constructionline Silver.

Frequently asked questions
Do you really cover Northampton from Windsor?
Yes. Our workshop is in Fifield, near Windsor, roughly 70 miles from Northampton by road, about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half via the M1. We have no local office, so we plan surveys and installations in advance and group appointments in the area. Our own surveyor and fitters make the journey for every job.
Is my house in a Northampton conservation area?
West Northamptonshire Council has many conservation areas in the town, including the Boot and Shoe Quarter, All Saints, Derngate, St Giles, Billing Road, Abington Park and Kingsthorpe. Some also have Article 4 directions that can control window changes. Check the council's conservation area maps or ask West Northamptonshire Council directly before ordering.
Can I replace windows in a converted shoe factory flat?
Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so changing windows in a converted factory usually needs planning permission, and some sit within the Boot and Shoe Quarter or other conservation areas. You will also need the freeholder's or management company's consent. Check with West Northamptonshire Council first. We can supply drawings and specifications for the application.
What windows suit a Northampton Victorian terrace?
Slim aluminium frames such as the Reynaers SlimLine 68 keep glass areas generous in narrow openings, while woodgrain-finish UPVC offers a timber look at lower cost. We do not make timber windows. If your terrace is in a conservation area with an Article 4 direction, check with West Northamptonshire Council what styles are acceptable.
How long will I wait for new windows in Northampton?
Aluminium frames are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days after order. Because Northampton is over an hour away, we agree the installation date in advance so the team can plan the trip around the journey. Your written quote and order confirmation set out the timetable, and our own fitters, not subcontractors, carry out the installation and take away the old frames and waste.
