Inspired Glazing builds uPVC conservatories in Sunbury-on-Thames, as well as orangeries, porches and replacement roofs for existing conservatories. We travel from our Fifield workshop, near Windsor, about 13 miles from Sunbury in a straight line or roughly 30 to 35 minutes via the M25 and M3, and our first visit is a free survey and design chat.

Sunbury homes and their gardens
Lower Sunbury, between the M3 and the Thames, is mostly 1930s to 1960s semi-detached and detached houses with gardens, many on leafy roads, and these are natural candidates for a conservatory. Sunbury Common to the north has more terraces and flats, where a lean-to or a porch is often the realistic choice. Charlton and Upper Halliford sit on the western edge, beside the Queen Mary Reservoir. Our conservatories page sets out every design we build.
Design options
Classic shapes
- Victorian conservatories have a faceted, bay-style end and a steep roof, adding character to a plain 1950s rear wall.
- Edwardian conservatories are rectangular, giving straightforward, furniture-friendly space.
- Regency and Elizabethan designs add decorative detail, and a gable front gives a tall, bright room.
- Lean-to conservatories suit terraces, bungalows and narrow gardens on the Common.
Larger combinations
Detached houses in Lower Sunbury can take an L-shaped conservatory around a corner, a T-shaped conservatory reaching into the garden, or a P-shaped conservatory combining a long lean-to with a rounded end. These large conservatories create separate dining and lounge areas. For smaller plots, a small conservatory of a few square metres still makes a bright breakfast spot.
The roof makes the room
Solid roof conservatories have an insulated, tiled roof and plastered ceiling. As well as keeping temperatures steady, a solid roof reduces the sound of rain and passing aircraft, which matters this close to Heathrow. Glass roof conservatories with solar-control glass maximise light, and laminated glass can help with noise. Polycarbonate roofs are the lightest and cheapest option, but they are the noisiest and least insulating.
If you already have a conservatory that is too hot in summer, too cold in winter or too loud under aircraft, our replacement conservatory roofs keep the existing frames and base. Orangeries, with brick piers and a roof lantern, give a heavier, more permanent room.
Groundwork near the Thames
Some streets in Lower Sunbury are close to the river, so check the Environment Agency flood map for your address before planning an extension. We design the base and floor levels around drainage and ground conditions, as our conservatory bases page explains. Frames are available in white, woodgrain such as Golden Oak or Mountain Oak, or grey, and dual colour gives a different finish on each face; ask us to confirm colours for the roof system you pick. For the garden end, French doors in uPVC are the traditional pick, with aluminium sliders and Smart Visofold or Cortizo bifolds for bigger openings.
Permitted development and planning in Spelthorne
The Planning Portal sets the limits for single-storey extensions, including conservatories. Without an application, a rear conservatory can extend 3 metres beyond the original rear wall of a semi or terrace and 4 metres on a detached house, or 6 and 8 metres with prior approval. It cannot be more than 4 metres high, eaves within 2 metres of a boundary must stay at or below 3 metres, and extensions cannot cover more than half the land around the original house. These rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes.
In the Lower Sunbury, Upper Halliford and Lower Halliford conservation areas, side extensions need planning permission and cladding is not permitted development, so check with Spelthorne Borough Council. Planning there passes to the new West Surrey unitary authority on 1 April 2027. Our guide to planning permission for conservatories and porches goes into more depth.
A conservatory is normally exempt from Building Regulations if it is single storey, at ground level, under 30 square metres, separated from the house by external quality walls, doors or windows, and heated independently with separate controls, with compliant glazing and electrics.
A porch for the front door
A porch gives a sheltered entrance and a buffer against draughts. It can be added without an application if the floor area is no more than 3 square metres, it is under 3 metres tall and it is at least 2 metres from a boundary with a highway. Ideas are on our porches page.
Costs and contact
Our conservatory cost guide explains how design, roof, base and doors affect the price, and each installation comes with our 10-year guarantee. For the house itself, see uPVC windows and doors in Sunbury-on-Thames or our Sunbury double glazing page. We also build conservatories in Walton-on-Thames, Shepperton and Weybridge.

Frequently asked questions
Which conservatory roof is quietest under Heathrow flight paths?
A solid, insulated tiled roof is the quietest, because its mass and insulation absorb both aircraft noise and rain. Glass roofs with laminated units come next, and polycarbonate is the noisiest. If you already have a polycarbonate roof, replacing it with a solid or laminated glass roof is often the single biggest improvement you can make.
Can I build a conservatory in a Sunbury conservation area?
Possibly. In the Lower Sunbury, Upper Halliford and Lower Halliford conservation areas, any side extension needs planning permission and external cladding is not permitted development. A rear conservatory within the normal limits may still be allowed, but listed buildings need consent. Check with Spelthorne Borough Council, and we can prepare drawings for an application.
Is my Lower Sunbury garden at flood risk?
Some streets near the Thames are, so check the Environment Agency flood map for your address before you plan. It does not rule out a conservatory, but it affects the base design, floor levels and door thresholds, and you should tell your insurer. We take drainage and ground conditions into account when we survey and design the foundations.
Can I add a conservatory to a maisonette or flat?
Flats and maisonettes do not have householder permitted development rights, so a conservatory would need a full planning application, plus agreement from the freeholder. Check with Spelthorne Borough Council and your lease. For ground-floor homes with a garden, a small lean-to or a porch may still be possible with the right permissions in place.
Do conservatories need Building Regulations in Spelthorne?
The national rules apply. A conservatory is usually exempt if it is single storey, at ground level, under 30 square metres, separated from the house by external quality doors or windows, and heated independently with its own controls. Glazing and fixed electrical work still have to comply, and knocking through into the house removes the exemption.
