370 listed buildings and a hillside town

Frome has more listed buildings than anywhere in Somerset except Bath: 370 in total, three of them Grade I, including the parish church. Most of the town centre lies within a conservation area. The town climbs unevenly from the River Frome, with the centre around 65 metres above sea level and outer areas reaching 135 metres, so many streets are steep.

The historic core is remarkable. Cheap Street, with buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, has a stream running down its middle and has never carried traffic. Catherine Hill holds what has been called an outstanding collection of small late 17th and 18th-century houses. The Trinity area was laid out as a planned grid of more than 300 artisans’ houses between 1660 and 1756, among the earliest purpose-built industrial housing in the country; about half was demolished in the 1960s and the rest restored in the early 1980s. Beyond the old town, later suburbs spread across the higher ground.

Even the town bridge is unusual: rebuilt and widened in 1821, it carries a terrace of houses and is one of only three bridges in England with buildings on it. Beside it stands the Blue House, built in 1726 as a school and almshouses.

Windows and doors for Frome properties

Small period houses in the centre and Trinity. Before choosing anything, find out whether the building is listed and how the conservation area affects it. We do not make timber windows. Where the council requires timber, our secondary glazing can be fitted inside original windows to make the house warmer and quieter without replacing them.

Later homes beyond the old centre. Where new frames are acceptable, our aluminium windows include the Reynaers SlimLine 68 outward-opening casement, with Cortizo and Alunet as alternatives. Slim sightlines help keep the proportions of older openings.

Modern estates. UPVC windows and doors in the Selecta Advance 70 system are a practical replacement for older UPVC, and a composite door gives a timber-style entrance that needs no repainting.

Gardens and extensions. On a sloping plot, a wide rear opening can transform a kitchen. We fit Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding doors and Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifold doors, and build conservatories, orangeries, porches and roof lanterns. Secondary glazing, garage doors, fascias, soffits, guttering, blinds and shutters complete the range.

Steep streets and narrow lanes affect how we deliver large glass units, so we look closely at access and parking during the survey.

Somerset Council and planning

Since Mendip District Council was abolished in 2023, planning in Frome has been handled by Somerset Council, the unitary authority. Frome Town Council remains the local town-level council. With so many listed buildings and a conservation area covering most of the centre, check with Somerset Council before ordering if your home is in the older part of town. Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so window changes in a flat generally need consent and the freeholder’s agreement. Our guide to planning permission for replacement windows has more.

Covering Frome and the villages

As well as the town, we cover Beckington, Rode, Nunney, Mells and Berkley. Nearby pages include double glazing in Warminster, Westbury and Midsomer Norton.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Frome house likely to be in the conservation area?

If you live in the town centre, quite possibly, as most of the centre is within a conservation area and Frome has 370 listed buildings. Homes in Trinity, Catherine Hill and around Cheap Street are among the most protected. Check with Somerset Council's planning team about your address before ordering new windows.

Who handles planning in Frome now Mendip has gone?

Somerset Council, the unitary authority that took over the functions of Mendip District Council when it was abolished in 2023. Frome Town Council still exists as the local town council and may comment on applications, but planning decisions and listed building consent are dealt with by Somerset Council.

Can you get large glass doors up steep Frome streets?

Usually, yes, but it needs planning. During the survey we check parking, steps, gates and the route through the house, and decide how many people the heaviest panes need on the day. If access is very tight, we will say so and suggest a door configuration with smaller, more manageable panels.

How long will I wait for new windows?

Aluminium windows are made in our Fifield workshop with lead times from 10 days after the order and final measurements are confirmed. Frome is roughly 90 miles from us, so the installation date also depends on our travel schedule, and we agree a firm date with you when you place the order.

Do you fit secondary glazing in Frome?

Yes. Secondary glazing is fitted on the inside of your existing windows, so it can be a good option for listed homes or conservation area properties where replacing the original frames is not allowed. It reduces draughts and outside noise and can be removed later without damaging the historic windows.
