A riverside village and a busier north side
Sunbury divides neatly in two. Lower Sunbury, the old village along Thames Street, French Street and Church Street, has Georgian villas, late Victorian terraces and cottages, and plenty of 1930s to 1960s semis behind the river. North of the M3, Sunbury Common and Sunbury Cross are more built-up, with blocks of flats, offices and the station on the Shepperton branch. We also look after homes in Charlton, Upper Halliford, Lower Halliford, Kempton and the edges of Shepperton.
Here is how the aluminium range tends to match the housing:
- Georgian and Victorian houses in Lower Sunbury: slim heritage casements with set-back glazing help restore some of the depth that bulky replacements removed.
- 1930s and post-war semis: Reynaers SlimLine 68 casements in anthracite or black give a crisp update without losing the original layout.
- Riverside and island homes: large fixed panes and tilt and turn windows make the most of the water views, and powder-coated aluminium copes well with damp river air.
Lower Sunbury conservation area and the 2027 council change
Spelthorne Borough Council’s draft appraisal for the Lower Sunbury conservation area notes that many older buildings still have timber sashes, and that thick uPVC replacements set flush with the wall have eroded the street scene. If your home is in Lower Sunbury, Lower Halliford or Upper Halliford conservation areas, or is listed, check with Spelthorne Borough Council before choosing a style. From 1 April 2027 Spelthorne becomes part of the new West Surrey Council, which will then handle planning. Our replacement windows planning guide covers the general rules.
Flats in Sunbury Common and around Sunbury Cross do not have householder permitted development rights, so window changes there usually need the freeholder’s consent and sometimes planning permission. We can supply product details to help with both.
Aircraft, the M3 and quieter rooms
Heathrow is roughly five miles away and the M3 starts at Sunbury Cross, so traffic and aircraft noise are part of life on many streets. Acoustic glazing pairs panes of different thickness with laminated glass to reduce that. Reynaers lists an acoustic rating up to Rw 47 dB for SlimLine 68 with the right glass. Read more on our sound reducing windows page.
Living beside the Thames
Homes on Thames Street, the riverside lanes and the residential islands deal with mist, damp air and, on some plots, the floodplain. Powder-coated aluminium shrugs off moisture far better than painted timber and never needs sanding back. On low-lying sites we talk through door thresholds, drainage and sill heights at the survey, so the finished installation suits the ground it sits on rather than a standard detail.
Thermal and security performance
SlimLine 68 is rated by Reynaers at a Uw of 1.1 W/mยฒK with triple glazing and is tested to PAS 24. Double glazing remains the popular choice for most Sunbury homes, with triple glazing kept for bedrooms on noisy or exposed elevations.
Windows and doors built around the garden
Many Sunbury semis have been extended at the back, and the doors matter as much as the windows. The Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliding door suits wide openings where you want big panes and few frames. For summer living, Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds stack neatly to one side. Inside, Crittall-style internal doors divide an open-plan kitchen without blocking the light. The whole aluminium windows and doors line-up includes Cortizo and Alunet windows as alternatives to Reynaers.
Colours run from classic white to anthracite grey and black, any RAL shade, or a dual-colour finish with a different tone inside.
Still deciding between materials?
Aluminium gives slimmer frames and larger glass; uPVC is a good-value choice for many post-war homes. Our honest uPVC versus aluminium casement article lays out both. We fit both, so see uPVC windows and doors in Sunbury-on-Thames, Sunbury conservatories and double glazing in Sunbury-on-Thames for the other options.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need permission for aluminium windows in Lower Sunbury?
If your home is in the Lower Sunbury conservation area, or is listed, check with Spelthorne Borough Council first. The council's appraisal highlights the loss of traditional windows, so slim frames with set-back glass are more likely to be acceptable than heavy replacements. From 1 April 2027 the new West Surrey Council takes over planning for Sunbury.
Can aluminium windows reduce Heathrow and M3 noise?
Yes, with the right glass. We use acoustic laminated panes of different thicknesses, which cut more of the low drone from traffic and aircraft than standard units. Reynaers gives SlimLine 68 a rating up to Rw 47 dB with suitable glazing. Real-world results also depend on wall construction, trickle vents and how well the frame is sealed.
I own a flat near Sunbury Cross. Can I replace my windows?
Usually, but flats have no householder permitted development rights, so you will need the freeholder's or managing agent's consent and possibly planning permission. Many leases also specify colour and style. We can send product data and drawings to your freeholder to help them approve the change.
Is aluminium or uPVC better for a 1950s Sunbury semi?
Both work. Aluminium offers slimmer frames, more glass and a wider choice of colours, which suits homeowners wanting a modern look. uPVC is a strong, cost-conscious option that performs well thermally. We make and fit both, so we will show you samples of each and explain the differences honestly during the survey.
How far is Sunbury from your workshop?
About 13 miles in a straight line, which is usually a 30 to 40 minute drive from Fifield depending on the M25 and A308. That keeps survey appointments and installation days easy to plan, and our own fitters handle every job rather than passing it to another firm.
