Riverside village and busy crossroads
Sunbury is really two places split by the M3, which begins at Sunbury Cross. South of the motorway, Lower Sunbury runs down to the Thames, with Georgian and early Victorian buildings along Thames Street and, around them, mostly 1930s to 1960s semi-detached and detached houses with gardens. North of the M3, Sunbury Common is more urban, with terraces, flats and four tower blocks near the station and shopping parade. On the western edge lie Charlton and Upper Halliford, bordered by the Queen Mary Reservoir, while Kempton Park racecourse marks the eastern side.
In Lower Sunbury we often replace windows on interwar and post-war houses, many with bay fronts. On the Common, compact terraces and maisonettes need efficient, secure frames at sensible cost. Whatever the property, our uPVC windows and doors page is a good place to begin.
Heathrow, the M3 and sound-reducing glass
Sunbury lies about 5 miles from Heathrow, so aircraft are part of daily life for many households, and the M3, the A316 and Sunbury Cross add constant road noise. Sound-reducing windows use laminated acoustic glass and carefully sealed frames to cut both. For a house that must keep its original windows, such as a listed building on Thames Street, secondary glazing on the inside adds a second barrier against noise and draughts.
What Advance 70 brings
Selecta Advance 70 is a 70mm uPVC system with five thermal chambers, and there is an 80mm traditional outer frame with eight chambers for period homes. According to Selecta, the system reaches 1.1 W/mยฒK with a 28mm double glazed unit and 0.8 W/mยฒK with a 40mm triple glazed unit, so triple glazing is available if you want it. Our energy-rated windows guide explains window energy ratings and the glass options behind them.
Window styles across Sunbury
- Casement windows, side or top hung, suit most interwar, post-war and newer homes. Glazing bars give a cottage window look.
- Flush casement windows close level with the frame for a traditional joinery appearance, a good match near the older parts of Lower Sunbury.
- Sash windows: Georgian and Victorian houses were usually built with sashes; read our uPVC sash windows page and ask us to confirm the option for your house, bearing in mind any conservation area rules.
- Tilt and turn windows open inward for cleaning, which is ideal for flats and upper floors where outside access is awkward.
- Bay windows and bows, common on 1930s semis, are part of the Advance 70 range.
Shaped windows depend on size and design, so ask us to confirm before you plan around one.
Locks, security and doors
Selecta has PAS 24 testing behind the Advance 70 casement and tilt and turn windows, while its doors add Secured by Design to PAS 24 and lock at several points. A new front door can be uPVC or one of our composite doors, which offer a solid timber-look leaf. Back doors can be specified with a low threshold. At the back of the house, uPVC French doors suit standard openings, and wider patio doors come as aluminium Reynaers ConceptPatio 130 sliders or Smart Visofold and Cortizo bifolds. You will also find us on the Reynaers at Home partner listing. Stable doors and smart locks depend on the door chosen, so ask us to confirm.
Colours, from grey to woodgrain
There are 18 Selecta Colourfoil finishes, and each can go on one or both faces of the frame. Options include Anthracite Grey, Agate Grey, Slate Grey, Ulti-Matt Black and Black/Brown, along with woodgrains such as Irish Oak, Mountain Oak, Rosewood and Golden Oak. Our range has no timber frames, so woodgrain foil and composite doors are the timber-look route. Browse the swatches on our window colours page before the survey.
Planning checks with Spelthorne
Spelthorne Borough Council has conservation areas at Lower Sunbury, Upper Halliford and Lower Halliford. If your house is in one, is listed, or is a flat, check with Spelthorne Borough Council before changing windows, because flats have no householder permitted development rights. Spelthorne’s current Article 4 directions concern conversions to houses in multiple occupation rather than windows. From 1 April 2027, Spelthorne becomes part of the new West Surrey Council. Our planning permission for replacement windows guide sets out the general position.
The river and your windows
Parts of Lower Sunbury sit close to the Thames, so if you are near the water, check the Environment Agency flood map for your address and talk to us about door thresholds.

Frequently asked questions
Will new windows reduce Heathrow aircraft noise in Sunbury?
They can reduce it noticeably. Laminated acoustic glass, ideally with panes of different thicknesses, handles the low-frequency rumble of aircraft and motorway traffic better than standard double glazing. Sealing the frame properly into the opening matters as much as the glass. We usually recommend acoustic units for bedrooms first, then living rooms facing the M3 or flight paths.
Can I replace windows in the Lower Sunbury Conservation Area?
You may be able to, but check with Spelthorne Borough Council first. Inside the Lower Sunbury, Upper Halliford or Lower Halliford conservation areas, changes to the look of a building are judged more carefully, and listed buildings need consent. We can provide drawings, profile details and colour samples to support any application or enquiry you make.
Do flats in Sunbury Common need permission for new windows?
Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so replacing windows can need planning permission, and you will usually need the freeholder's or management company's agreement too. Check with Spelthorne Borough Council and your lease before ordering. Tilt and turn windows, which open inwards for easy cleaning, are often a good fit for upper-floor flats.
How long does it take you to reach Sunbury-on-Thames?
Our workshop is at Fifield, near Windsor, about 13 miles from Sunbury in a straight line. By road it is usually 30 to 35 minutes using the M25 and M3, depending on traffic. We plan fitting days to arrive early and allow for the journey, so installation work is not cut short.
Do you fit black or grey uPVC windows?
Yes. Selecta offers Anthracite Grey, Slate Grey, Agate Grey, Hazy Grey and Pebble Grey, plus Ulti-Matt Black and Black/Brown. Each can go on the outside only, with white inside, or on both faces. In a conservation area, darker colours may be judged on how they affect the street, so check with Spelthorne Borough Council first.
