Agate grey flush uPVC windows – Englefield Green

A village shaped by the Great Park

Englefield Green grew from a small hamlet in the nineteenth century after the Crown Estate sold off land from the Great Park. Villas and detached houses line the roads around the green itself, and the seven halls north of the village, once Brunel University’s Runnymede campus, are now a retirement village. The west of the village has a large share of privately rented homes, many of them let to students at Royal Holloway.

Each of those groups wants something slightly different from a window. Owners of period villas look for slim, traditional profiles. Landlords want robust, low-maintenance frames and secure doors that survive a busy tenancy, and retirement households often value easy-grip handles and level door thresholds.

Planning: the conservation area and the move to West Surrey

Runnymede Borough Council revised the Englefield Green Conservation Area boundary and adopted a new appraisal and management plan, both in force from 1 December 2023. If your property sits within the area, or is listed, check with Runnymede Borough Council before altering the look of windows or doors facing the street. From 1 April 2027 planning passes to the new West Surrey Council. Our replacement windows planning page explains the usual rules, and secondary glazing is an option for listed buildings where the original frames must stay.

What goes into a Selecta Advance 70 frame

Selecta Advance 70 is a 70mm uPVC system with five internal thermal chambers. With a 28mm double glazed unit Selecta quotes a U-value of 1.1 W/m²K, falling to 0.8 W/m²K with a 40mm triple glazed unit. Casement and flush sash windows are listed at an A+ energy rating, and you can read how those ratings work on our energy-rated windows page. For window security, casements are tested to PAS 24 and Secured by Design when specified correctly.

Choosing a window style

Colours, foils and glass

There are 18 Colourfoil finishes, on one face or both, so a frame can be Anthracite Grey or Ulti-Matt Black outside and white inside. Woodgrain foils such as Mountain Oak and Rosewood give a timber look without painting, since we do not supply wooden frames. See our window colours guide. Glass options include laminated and toughened safety glass, obscure patterns and triple glazing.

Quieter rooms

Traffic on the A30 and the M25 junction at Egham carries some way on a still night. For bedrooms facing busy roads, sound-reducing windows with laminated acoustic glass are worth considering.

Front doors, back doors and patio doors

Our front door range covers uPVC and composite doors in solid or glazed designs, all with multi-point locks. For the back of the house, choose a matching uPVC back door, French doors that open fully onto a patio, or MASTERslide patio doors from Selecta. Ask us to confirm stable door options. Smart locks and upgraded cylinders can be discussed at survey for extra door security.

Repair or replacement

A blown sealed unit or a failed hinge can usually be replaced on its own. If several windows are draughty, rotten or rattling, full replacement is often better value over time. Our double glazing costs page lists what changes the price, and the main uPVC windows and doors page shows the wider range.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need consent to change windows in the Englefield Green Conservation Area?

Runnymede Borough Council adopted revised boundaries and a management plan for the conservation area from December 2023. Like-for-like replacements on houses are often acceptable, but changes to the appearance of street-facing windows or doors, and any work on listed buildings, should be checked with the council first. From April 2027 that role passes to West Surrey Council.

Which windows do you recommend for student lets near Royal Holloway?

Landlords tend to choose white or grey Selecta Advance 70 casements or tilt and turn windows, because they need little upkeep and tilt open for ventilation without leaving a wide gap. Restrictors can be fitted on upper floors. A composite or uPVC front door with a multi-point lock gives a secure entrance for shared houses.

Can you make uPVC windows look like timber on an older villa?

Yes. Selecta offers woodgrain Colourfoil finishes such as Mountain Oak, Irish Oak, Golden Oak and Rosewood, applied to one or both faces. A flush casement gives a slimmer line than a standard sash. If the house is listed and the originals must stay, secondary glazing fitted inside is usually the right answer.

Will triple glazing make much difference in Englefield Green?

Triple glazing improves the U-value from about 1.1 W/m²K with 28mm double glazing to 0.8 W/m²K with a 40mm triple unit, according to Selecta. It also helps a little with noise. For most houses good double glazing is enough, but north-facing rooms, bedrooms near busy roads and larger windows are where triple glazing earns its place.

How long does it take to get new windows in Englefield Green?

After a free survey and a signed order, lead times run from 10 days, depending on colours and the number of windows. Our team travels from Fifield, about 20 to 25 minutes away, and we agree fitting dates around tenancies or term dates for landlords. You get a 10-year guarantee on the completed work.
