Langley homes and what they need from double glazing
Langley was a separate village of scattered greens until the 1930s, when its built-up southern part was absorbed into Slough. Much of the housing therefore dates from the decades after that, alongside the older almshouses near St Mary’s Church and newer streets on the former Hawker aircraft and Ford factory land, where roads such as Spitfire Close recall the area’s history. For most owners here, double glazing has to do three jobs at once: keep heat in, cut down noise, and stand up to everyday family use.
Aircraft, motorway and rail: the noise question
Heathrow is only a few miles east, the M4 runs along Langley’s southern edge, and the Great Western main line carries trains through the station. That combination makes sound-reducing windows a frequent request. Two upgrades make the biggest difference: a thicker unit with glass panes of different weights, and laminated acoustic glass on the noisiest elevation. Selecta notes that a 40mm triple-glazed unit improves acoustic performance as well as heat retention. Read more on our sound-reducing windows page, and if you rent or cannot change the main frames, secondary glazing adds a second barrier inside the room.
Our uPVC system
All our uPVC windows in Langley are made from Selecta Advance 70, a 70mm profile with five thermal chambers. Selecta quotes 1.1 W/mยฒK with 28mm double glazing and 0.8 W/mยฒK with 40mm triple glazing. Its casements carry PAS 24 testing and Secured by Design compliance when specified correctly, giving solid window security for ground-floor rooms. The difference between U-values and window energy ratings is explained on our energy-rated windows page.
Styles for semis, terraces and new builds
- Casement windows suit the majority of post-1930s semis and terraces, with a choice of side-hung, top-hung and fixed panes.
- Flush casement windows have sashes that close level with the frame, a neat look for the older cottages around the parish church.
- Sash windows: for a vertical sliding look, see our uPVC sash windows page and ask us to confirm availability.
- Tilt and turn: useful in flats and upstairs bedrooms, because tilt and turn windows can be cleaned from inside.
- Bay windows: Selecta offers bay and bow frames, so bay windows on a 1930s front can be renewed in the same footprint.
- Cottage and shaped windows: smaller panes or arched heads can be explored at survey; ask us to confirm what your openings allow.
Glass options
Beyond standard clear double glazing, choose obscure glass for bathrooms and front-door side panels, toughened safety glass where building rules require it, and laminated glass for security and noise. Triple glazing is available in the 40mm unit.
Colour choices
Selecta’s Colourfoil range runs to 18 finishes on one or both sides of the frame. In Langley, Anthracite Grey and Slate Grey are popular on modernised semis and newer homes, Ulti-Matt Black suits a contemporary refresh, and woodgrain finishes such as Rosewood and Golden Oak offer a warm timber look. We do not make timber windows. Every finish is listed on our window colours page.
Doors for every entrance
We fit uPVC doors on the Advance 70 door system, which Selecta has tested to PAS 24 and Secured by Design. They work well as back doors onto the garden or side doors into a utility room. For the front of the house, many owners prefer composite doors, and our front doors page shows designs and colours. At the back, French doors open both leaves wide, and sliding patio doors are ideal where furniture sits close to the glass. Stable doors are worth asking about if you want the top half open while children or pets stay in. We can advise on door security, including multi-point locking, and on smart lock options.
Repair, replacement and planning
If a unit has misted or a handle has failed, window repair may be enough, and we will tell you when it is. Where seals have perished across the house, full replacement is usually better value over time. Our guide to double glazing costs explains what affects a quote.
St Mary’s Church, Langley is one of Slough’s conservation areas, and nearby Colnbrook is another. If your home is in either, or is listed, check with Slough Borough Council before changing windows. Our planning permission for replacement windows page sets out the general position.
We hold Constructionline Silver and are a listed Reynaers at Home partner, so aluminium windows are available too.

Frequently asked questions
Which windows cut aircraft noise best in Langley?
For aircraft and motorway noise, the most effective option is usually laminated acoustic glass in a unit with panes of different thickness, fitted with good seals. Triple glazing helps too, and Selecta says its 40mm unit improves acoustic performance. We recommend concentrating the upgrade on bedrooms and the elevation that faces Heathrow or the M4.
Can I replace bay windows on my 1930s semi in Langley?
Yes. Selecta Advance 70 includes bay and bow frames, so we can replace a bay in the same shape and size. We check the structure above the bay at survey, because some older bays rely on the window frames for support. If that is the case, we will explain what is needed before any old frames are removed.
Do I need permission for new windows near St Mary's Church?
The area around St Mary's Church is a conservation area, and the church itself is Grade I listed, so the rules can be tighter than elsewhere in Langley. Like-for-like replacements on ordinary houses often need no application, but you should check with Slough Borough Council before going ahead, especially if the house is old or listed.
How long will fitting take for a three-bedroom house?
Most three-bedroom homes in Langley are completed in one to two days, depending on the number of windows and whether any doors are included. The lead time for manufacture is from 10 days after you confirm the order. We keep each room open for as short a time as possible and tidy away old frames as we go.
Are composite doors more secure than uPVC doors?
Both can be very secure when fitted with good locks. Our uPVC doors use the Advance 70 door system, which Selecta has tested to PAS 24 and Secured by Design. Composite doors have a thicker, solid feel and a painted-timber look that many owners prefer for the front. We can show you both and talk through the locking options for each.
