Uxbridge housing and double glazing

Uxbridge is the administrative centre of the London Borough of Hillingdon, and its housing is more varied than many people expect. The town grew quickly after the Metropolitan line arrived in 1904, adding streets of terraces and semis. The 2011 census showed Ickenham dominated by detached houses, Hillingdon East mainly terraced, Harefield mostly semi-detached and Uxbridge South with around four in ten homes as flats. Brunel University, opened in 1966, also means a large number of rented houses. Each type needs something different from its double glazed windows, so we survey before recommending a product.

About the frames we fit

We use the Selecta Advance 70 system, a 70mm uPVC profile with five thermal chambers. With a 28mm double-glazed unit Selecta states a U-value of 1.1 W/m²K, and with 40mm triple glazing that improves to 0.8 W/m²K. Casements are PAS 24 tested and Secured by Design compliant when correctly specified, which gives landlords and owner-occupiers a clear window security benchmark.

Choosing uPVC windows in Uxbridge

  1. Casement windows: the standard for terraces and semis in Hillingdon and Cowley, simple to operate and easy to maintain.
  2. Flush casement: a refined look where the sash sits flush with the frame, popular on interwar homes.
  3. Sash windows: if you live in an older property near Windsor Street, our uPVC sash windows page explains the choices; ask us to confirm what we can supply.
  4. Tilt and turn: tilt and turn windows are well suited to flats and student lets, since they ventilate securely and can be cleaned from inside.
  5. Bay windows: many 1930s houses in Ickenham and Hillingdon have bays, and Selecta’s bay and bow frames let us replace bay windows in their existing shape.
  6. Cottage and shaped windows: smaller-paned designs or arched tops can be discussed during survey; ask us to confirm details.

Conservation areas in Uxbridge

Hillingdon Council lists several conservation areas in and around the town: Old Uxbridge/Windsor Street, Uxbridge Lock, Uxbridge Moor, The Greenway, Rockingham Bridge, Cowley Church (St Laurence) and Cowley Lock. If your home is in one of these or is listed, check with Hillingdon Council before replacing windows or doors. Our planning permission for replacement windows page gives a general overview.

Warmth, sound and glass options

Homes beside the A40, along the Grand Union Canal towpath or near the busy town centre can pick up a lot of noise. Sound-reducing windows with laminated acoustic glass and the 40mm triple-glazed unit, which Selecta says improves acoustic performance, are the main upgrades. To understand window energy ratings, see our energy-rated windows page. Where you cannot change the outer frames, perhaps in a leasehold flat, secondary glazing adds a second layer inside.

Glass options also include obscure glass, toughened safety glass and laminated security glass for ground-floor rooms.

Window colours

Selecta’s Colourfoil collection provides 18 finishes, foiled on the outside only or on both faces. Grey shades such as Anthracite Grey and Pebble Grey suit modernised semis, black brings a crisp contrast on rendered fronts, and woodgrain finishes like Golden Oak and Rosewood give a traditional timber appearance. We do not fit timber windows. See all choices on our window colours page.

Uxbridge doors

Our uPVC doors use the Advance 70 door system, tested by Selecta to PAS 24 and Secured by Design, a solid choice for back doors and side entrances. For the front, composite doors provide a thicker, timber-look slab; browse styles on our front doors page. French doors open wide onto the garden, and patio doors slide to save space. If you want the top half to open independently, ask us to confirm stable door options. We can talk through door security, multi-point locking and smart lock choices.

Fix or replace?

We are happy to look at window repair first: replacing a misted unit or broken handle can extend the life of decent frames. If the whole house has failing seals or draughts, replacement is usually the better investment. The factors behind a quote are set out in our double glazing cost guide.

Inspired Glazing holds Constructionline Silver and is a listed Reynaers at Home partner, so aluminium windows are also available.

Frequently asked questions

Do you fit windows in rented and student houses in Uxbridge?

Yes. Many landlords near Brunel University choose uPVC because it needs little maintenance and gives good security. Tilt and turn windows are a practical choice for upper floors, and Advance 70 casements are PAS 24 tested. We can arrange surveys and fitting around tenants, and we will explain what each room needs so the work is done efficiently.

Can I replace windows in a leasehold flat in Uxbridge?

Usually you will need your freeholder's or managing agent's consent, because windows are often part of the building's structure. Planning rules for flats differ from houses too. Check your lease and with Hillingdon Council before going ahead. Where outer frames cannot be changed, secondary glazing fitted inside your flat is often a good alternative.

What helps most with A40 traffic noise?

Laminated acoustic glass is the biggest single improvement, especially in a unit with panes of different thickness. Selecta says its 40mm triple-glazed unit also improves acoustic performance. Good seals and correct fitting matter as much as the glass. We usually suggest upgrading bedrooms and living rooms that face the road first, then looking at the rest of the house.

Are uPVC windows allowed in Uxbridge conservation areas?

It depends on the area, the building and whether any extra controls apply. Old Uxbridge/Windsor Street and the canal-side conservation areas include some older and listed buildings, where uPVC may not be accepted. Check with Hillingdon Council before ordering. On many ordinary houses within these areas, sympathetic designs and colours can make uPVC acceptable.

How long does it take to fit new windows on a terraced house?

A typical two or three-bedroom terrace is usually finished in one or two days, depending on the number of windows and whether doors are included. Manufacturing lead time is from 10 days after the order is confirmed. We remove the old frames, fit and seal the new ones, and leave the rooms clean and tidy.
